EXTENDED MODULE DETAILS

Module aims:

The aims of this module are to:

  • Introduce students systematically into basic medical vocabulary that will be needed for any serious engagement with Medical English and that will be of crucial importance in their future professional life
  • Develop main language skills that medical students need to help them cope with their professional literature in English, which will be an indispensable part of their future professional development (different types of reading, comprehension, translation, information gathering, summarizing, presentation of scientific data, etc.)
  • Develop and master reading and speaking linguistic skills
  • Offer medical students some practice in writting referral letters and completing a range of medical documents
  • Help students communicate in English with patients, their relatives, with medical colleagues and with paramedical staff.
  • Help students cope with medical reading of all kinds, from case notes to journal articles

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • speak fluently about and discuss different medical topics
  • translate specialized medical texts
  • use and deeply understand medical literature of different kinds
  • communicate well in English with patients, their relatives and other medical colleagues
  • have a good doctor-patient communication (from history taking and examination to diagnosis and treatment)
  • analyse different types of medical readings and present new and important information in a systematic way

Learning Delivery:

This module will employ a variety of teaching and learning modes. Students will read and translate a variety of key texts in the field of Medical English (emphasis on the aquisition of new vocabulary and text comprehension). They will discuss these texts with their peers and with the instructor. Class time will also include some practical exercises intended to ensure a better communication with the patients and medical colleagues. The module will also integrate revision of the most essential grammatical units for the Medical English (in the form of PowerPoint presentations, tests, etc.). The students are obliged to write one term paper in which they are to demonstrate analytical, language and professional competences.
